In 2012 Nick was invited to give a ninety minute lecture on his personal vision for the future of sound to an audience of faculty and students, which included Nicolas Negroponote and Mervin Minsky, at the MIT MediaLab, as part of their Distinguished Art and Design Lecture series.
Also in 2012 Nick was invited by the British recording artist Ben Drew (also known as PlanB) to supervise the sound for his experimental debut feature film, a hip hop ‘musical’, ‘iLL Manors’. Nick also collaborated with Pascal Theatre Company to create ‘The Secret Listeners’, a one hour ‘site specific’ performance in Trent Park House, based on conversations, transcribed from wax cylinders, which took place between Nazi Generals who were imprisoned there between 1942 and 1945.
Nick began 2013 by debuting his new composition ‘As above, so below’ - a twenty minute contemporary orchestral work for string orchestra, about his Father, Mark Ryan, who was tragically killed in an accident on a tea plantation in Kenya on the 30th December 1974. The piece was premiered 23rd February 2013 by The Ten Tors Orchestra, conducted by Simon Ible at Plymouth University as part of the Peninsular Arts Contemporary Music Festival – ‘Sensing Memory’ and described by Michael White in The Telegraph Newspaper as “Entrancing”.
In April Nick contributed to the Theatrum Mundi ideas camp at the Dome of Visions in Copenhagen and, in May, collaborated with ground breaking cellist Peter Gregson, finnish concert violinist Pekka Kuusisto and reactive music developers Reactify to compose a new piece for cello, violin, poetry and electronics for the Faster Than Sound music festival at Aldeburgh Music during a week long residency at Aldeburgh. www.nickryanmusic.com
